Examination Card 12
I have just come from Great Britain and I would like to share some information about this country. Great Britain is situated on the British Isles. It is located to the north-west of Europe and is surrounded by water on all sides. Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the English Channel. The English Channel separates Britain from the European continent. The ocean and the seas influence the British climate: they make it mild and damp. In Britain it is never too cold in winter and it is never too hot in summer. Great Britain consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The capital of England is London, the capital of Scotland is Edinburg, the capital of Wales is Cardiff and the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. England is situated in the central part of Britain, and it is the biggest country of all. In northwest England there are many beautiful lakes and a lot of tourists come to see them. The English call this part of the country Lake District. Scotland is a mountainous country. The highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, is in Scotland. Scotland is famous for its lakes which are called lochs. The most famous of them is Loch Ness because people think that a pre-historic monster lives there. In Wales there are many beautiful mountains, too. The highest mountain in Wales is Snowdon. Northern Ireland is the smallest country in Britain. Ireland is often called the Emerald Island because there the grass is green all the year round. The population of Great Britain is about 57 million people. Most people live in cities and towns and work at plants, schools and hospitals. Some other people live in villages and grow crops or raise farm animals. | |
